Upload Rules

What you can upload as a character, location or prop, what we draw for you from a description, what we check before anything is saved, and what happens when something shouldn't be here.

Last updated October 21, 20268 sectionsAbout 4 minutes to read

In plain terms

Upload what's yours to use: photos you took, of people who agreed, places you've been and things you own. Other people's characters, film and TV stills, posters and stock photos are refused. A public figure can be added only by them or by someone acting for them with their permission.

A summary for reading — the numbered sections below are the document.

Welcome

  • You
  • Family and friends who agreed
  • Your pets
  • Your home, office, places you've been
  • Things you own
  • Your own or your company's logo

Only with permission

  • A public figure — if you are them or act for them
  • A child — with a parent's or guardian's OK
  • Someone else's photo or artwork — with a license
  • Another company's logo — with the owner's OK

Refused at upload

  • Other people's characters, toys, cosplay
  • Film, TV, game and broadcast stills
  • Magazine covers and posters
  • Stock photos and watermarked shots
  • Unsafe content
01

People

  • Yourself, or someone who agreed. Ask before you upload a friend, partner or colleague, and tell them their face will appear in comics you make.

  • Children only with the permission of a parent or guardian — usually that’s you.

  • Public figures — celebrities, politicians, athletes, creators — only if you are that person, or you act for them with their permission, for example as part of their team. When a photo or name looks like a public figure, we ask you to confirm this before anything is saved, and we keep a record that you did.

  • One person per character. Group photos are refused; add each person as their own character.

Long-dead historical figures — Lincoln, Cleopatra, Napoleon — are fine to draw. The rule is about living people and the recently deceased, whose likeness still belongs to them or their estate.

02

Places

  • Photos you took of real places: your kitchen, your office, a street, a landmark on a trip.

  • Not a still from a film or show, a photo from a stock library, or someone else’s painting, render or illustration of a place.

  • Billboards and shop signs that happen to be in your photo are fine.

03

Props & logos

  • Objects you own or photographed: a bike, a trunk, a product you make.

  • Logos and signs that are yours or your organization’s — a training team putting the company logo into onboarding comics is exactly what this is for. Someone else’s logo needs the trademark owner’s permission.

  • A toy, figure or costume of someone else’s character is refused, the same as a photo of the character.

04

AI-generated characters

  • What we draw. You write a name and what the character looks like — hair, face, build, clothes. We draw one neutral character sheet: a single full-body figure on a plain background, with no comic style yet. Your comic’s art style is applied when the character appears in a panel. Moods and expressions are left off the sheet, so each panel can set its own.

  • What it costs. Every drawing costs 1 credit, redraws included. If a drawing fails, the credit comes back. Using the character in a comic costs nothing extra.

  • Someone else’s character is refused. A name or description of a character from a film, show, game or book is refused before anything is drawn, and nothing is charged. Describe a real person only if you are that person or they agreed.

  • A library of their own. AI-generated characters never use a photo upload slot. Every account can keep 1, the First Comic pack 2, and subscriptions and bigger packs more — see Pricing. A look of an AI-generated character counts in the same library.

  • Versions. Each redraw is kept as a new version, up to 20 per character, and becomes the one in use. You can switch back to an older version or delete one, but not the last. All versions share one library slot. Switching changes the comics you make afterwards, not the ones already drawn.

  • Saving a character from a comic. A character the AI cast in one of your comics can be saved to your library. We redraw them as a neutral sheet for 1 credit; the comic itself doesn’t change. The new sheet may keep a little of the comic’s style — a redraw can fix it.

05

Never accepted

In any library, whatever you call it:

  • Copyrighted or trademarked characters — cartoon, anime, game, comic, mascot

  • Frames or screenshots from films, TV, games and broadcasts

  • Someone else’s character described in words, the same as a photo of them

  • Magazine covers, movie and event posters

  • Stock photos and pictures with a photographer’s watermark

  • Sexual content, graphic violence, anything involving a minor in an unsafe way

  • A person’s photo used to mock, harass or impersonate them

06

How we check

Every photo is checked twice before it’s saved, in a few seconds:

Safety

Unsafe images are refused and deleted straight away.

Rights

We read the name you typed and the clues a picture carries — letterboxing, subtitles, watermarks, a press backdrop. We never try to recognize whose face it is.

  • If a check can’t answer, nothing is saved and you can try again in a minute — we don’t save first and look later.

  • Passing the checks doesn’t make an upload allowed. You still promise, when you tick the box, that it’s yours to use.

07

Upload limits

  • Every account can keep one character, one location and one prop, and uploads cost no credits. The First Comic pack adds a second character; a subscription, or a credit pack from the Creator Pack up, adds more — see Pricing.

  • Accounts that haven’t bought anything can make 3 uploads a day. Uploads that fail on our side don’t count.

08

Reports & removal

  • See your face, your character or your work in a comic you didn’t agree to? Email support@comicory.com with the link. A person reads every report.

  • When a complaint is credible we remove the photo and the characters and comics made from it.

  • Uploading someone’s likeness or work deliberately without permission, or doing it again after a removal, closes the account, as in our Terms.
