The Last Train

An aging factory worker rides the last train of the night, a fading photograph of his estranged daughter in his hands. Dim streetlamps strobe past the window as memories flicker across his face. At the final stop she is standing on the platform, holding the same photo.

Before Elias can reach Mara, the station lights fail and the last train begins moving again with its doors open. Mara pulls Elias aboard, where they discover a sealed envelope addressed to Mara beneath Elias’s seat and realize someone expected them to reunite.

Mara retrieves the sealed envelope addressed to Mara from beneath Elias’s seat and finds a key plus a warning written in Elias’s estranged wife’s handwriting. Elias admits he has received identical anonymous messages for weeks, but never told Mara because each one ordered him to stay away from her.

Elias pulls the emergency brake, but the train ignores it and passes every station. Mara searches the driver’s cabin and discovers it is empty, while Elias finds fresh footprints leading from the front carriage toward them.
